Music & Entertainment

 

The following entertainers are listed in the order of their performance. They  will offer earth-friendly music on the main stage in the relaxed setting of the cafe'. The dance performance will be outdoors, weather permitting, and in the Oakland Room (Films & More) otherwise.

 

Opening Ceremony: The Healing Power of the Drum

Annette & Edward Jones & Friends (11am-12 noon)

Join with us for a powerful experience of drumming for Earth's healing. Some percussion instruments will be available or bring your own. The opening will be followed by an inspiring DVD viewing of "The GrandMother Drum and the opening of the Global Heart".

Kuungana Drum and Dance Company

Kevin Collins (12pm-1pm & 2:30pm-3:30pm, outdoors)

Kevin Collins is a master percussionist who takes pride in youth development in local communities.  His company is based on the African proverb and principle that "It takes a whole village to raise a child".  Kuungana works with children and youth ages 2 to 25.  The group keeps the tradition of West African Dance alive by teaching dances from Senegal, Ghana, and Mali.  Children and adults alike will enjoy these performances.

  

 Upland Hills Music 

Ted Strunck (1pm-2pm)

Ted Strunck has been playing guitar since he was 8.  He began writing songs at 18. After college, he began a 15 year career of playing music mainly in dark, smoky bars. He sold some songs along the way. After he and his wife, Jane, adopted their 2 children he decided to pursue a more conventional career. He landed at Upland Hills School (website) in 1990 and began his 18 year (so far) teaching career. Ted brought his music with him. He teaches it and writes songs for theater and events at the school. Many of his songs have to do with the natural world.

 

Earth Day & All That Jazz

Jeffrey Newton (2pm-3pm)

Jeffrey Newton is a professional jazz saxophonist from the suburban Detroit area and an alumnus of the fabled Oakland University Jazz Studies program of the1970's.  At the time, the program was considered to be the finest in the country and produced numerous great jazz musicians. Jeffrey has performed with some of the greats: Dizzy Gillespie, Branford Marsalis and Dave Brubeck.

 

Music to Celebrate the Earth

Guy Louis and Reggie Harrison (3pm-4pm)

Since 1986, Guy's programs have been met with rave reviews as outstanding, fast-paced musical adventures for all ages. Guy and Reggie are happy to be playing a part of the 2008 Earth Expo. The siblings, who have enjoyed a musical collaboration that has lasted over 20 years, will perform music that celebrates the earth

 

Earth Music

Joe Reilly (4:30pm-5:30pm) 

Joe Reilly (website) has been a singer, songwriter, and guitarist for over twelve years and has had extensive performance and touring experience, bringing messages of hope, peace and environmental justice in his songs to audiences across the United States. Joe will provide both a kids and general audience performance.
