Diet and the Environment

Paul Krause (1pm-2pm)

An enlightening and comprehensive look at the connection between our diet and its impact on the environment. Explores how bringing greater awareness to diet can be of benefit to both your health and the health of the environment.

Paul Krause is a pharmacist and pharmacy owner. He is also a Board of Directors member of VegMichigan.

 

Energy-Smart Tips for Everyone

Jessica Lehti (11:30am-12:30pm)

Discover lots of ways to reduce your energy consumption.  This presentation will provide something for everyone -- from those who are just starting to explore ways to save energy -- to those who think they have done it all. The feasibility of incorporating renewable energy at your site will also be discussed.

Jessica Lehti is the Sales and Marketing Manager for Choose Renewables which has been testing and validating products that save energy without compromising performance.

 

Family Ecology

Rich Chakrin (3:30pm-4:30pm)

If the "garden" is a metaphor for harmonious family life, then a "compost pile" can represent a family's ability to transform stress, difficult emotions, chaos and "mistakes" into "fertile" life affirming experiences. This talk will offer several simple, powerful tools to support your "composting".

Rich Chakrin has a MA in early childhood education. For the past 12 years he has facilitated many parent education classes in a variety of settings.

 

Green Building Strategies

Jack Kobliska (12:30pm-1:30pm)

This session will cover energy efficient building practices from conceptual design, orientation of structure to site, cost and materials estimating, construction techniques to selection of green building materials.

Jack Kobliska co-founded Lands Friend Builders, Inc. in 1978 after having been a teacher at Upland Hills School. The company is based on green building principles which include energy efficient, passive solar design and construction.

 

Heal Your Life and Heal Our Earth

Sandra Agazzi Chimenti (4:30pm-5:30pm)

Author Sandra Agazzi Chimenti invites you to reconnect with your Real Self through the "Awakening Process" and "Seven Aspects of Spiritual Awakening." Discover how your positive thoughts, words, actions, and presence can heal your life and our earth.

How to Bring Back Mother Nature

Herman Meinke, Christine Meinke and Alexandrea Brown (1:30pm-2:30pm)

Discover amazing regenerative methods being used to restore some of the most degraded land and water systems on the planet as well as our own health. John Todd’s "living machines", Biodynamic farming and the healing power of raw foods will be among the topics covered in this inspiring seminar.

Herman Meinke is a world known researcher, environmentalist, farmer and research chemist. His daughter Christine is a massage therapist, health coach and owner of Tree House for Earth's Children located in Southfield.  Alex Brown is  researcher and works at the Tree House where she practices foot reflexology and massage therapy.
 

Investing in Alternative Energy

Maureen Kickham and Jeff Kingzett (1:30pm-2:30pm)

High prices and growing demand are taxing global resources.  Renewable energy could help solve climate change.  Now may be the time to invest in alternate energy, for your portfolio and the world’s future.

Maureen Kickham has a non-profit land use background.  Jeff Kingzet has a public policy background. Together they bring a strong focus in environmentally and socially responsible investing.

 

Making Local Eating a Reality

Julie LaPorte (12:30pm-1:30pm)

Learn about how eating locally can impact the economy, ecology, and your health in a positive way while also rebuilding community and connectivity to our food sources. Resources for local food and producers will be shared as well as storage tips.

Julie Fiorani LaPorte is the owner of "La Vida Local", a business engaged in repairing and rebuilding community, including years of experience connecting farmer to consumer.

 

Natural Building in the Midwest

Deanne Bednar (4:30pm-5:30pm)

See examples of regional natural buildings that lower energy consumption  in the both the construction and use of a structure! Strawbale, cordwood, balecob, compressed earth block wall systems, living roofs, thatched roofs and more!

Deanne Bednar is a natural building educator. She co-designed/built the Strawbale Studio & Kensington Kids Cottage, and illustrated the Hand-Sculpted House, the Natural Plaster Book & the Cobber's Companion.

 

Organic and Natural Living

Heather Carmona (4pm-5pm)

An enlightening and informative presentation for anyone confused or intrigued about Organics. Presentation addresses the myths, current industry trends, labeling and certifications, shopping tips and ways to simply and affordably make the switch.

Heather Carmona is an Organic Wellness Consultant with Natural Health & Healing certification from Schoolcraft College.

 

Reversing Heart Disease without Drugs or Surgery

Dr. Robert Jarski (3pm-4pm)

Most individuals with heart disease can not only stop the progression, but actually reverse coronary artery disease without drugs or surgery. Come and learn the four lifestyle changes that reverse and prevent heart disease.

Dr. Robert Jarski is professor and director of the Oakland University Complementary Medicine and Wellness Program. He worked with Dr. Dean Ornish  in the landmark heart disease research study.

 

Shifting to Green Energy

Come learn what you can do to support green energy in the State of Michigan.

Larry Kaufman is the energy expert at DTE Energy and a frequent guest on radio and TV shows in the metro Detroit area.  

 

Sustainable Technologies

John Barrie (3:30pm-4:30pm)

New simple sustainable solutions for eradicating poverty and improving the quality of life in the developing world.

John Barrie is a Green Architect who works in Guatemala and Nicaragua providing new appropriate technology solutions in cities and rural areas.

 

The “Locavore” Challenge

Dr. Fay Hansen (2:30pm-3:30pm)

Is the "locavore" challenge a fad, fantasy, or a fix?  How might eating locally affect the planet, and where do you go to find locally produced food and how would it change the environmental and economic face of Oakland County and beyond?

Dr. Fay Hansen, a biologist at OU, is currently on sabbatical at MSU learning the science and practice of organic farming and the environmental coordinator for Tall Trees Community.

 

The Many Uses for Corn

Amy Garrison (11:30am-12:30pm)

This presentation will focus on corn production and numerous alternative uses for corn beyond food and fuel, such as plastics, fabric, clothing and more!

Amy Garrison attended Michigan State University and received her BS degree in Agricultural Communications in 2007. Amy began working for the Michigan Corn Office in April of 2007. 

 

Upland Hills EAC - Energizing a Brighter Future

Chris Tarr (12:30pm-1pm)

Upland Hills Ecological Awareness Center, founding partner of the Earth Day Expo,  is a non-profit organization, located in northern Oakland County. For over thirty years it has been dedicated to providing experiences and resources that promote sustainable and responsible relationships with the natural world and each other. It is a designated Michigan Energy Demonstration Center providing seminars and workshops in sustainability, energy and indigenous wisdom. Take a quick PowerPoint tour of this one-of-a kind facility and learn about its unique history, wide range of current programs, and exciting plans for outreach and growth.   

Chris Tarr is UHEAC's Program Director, past Executive Director, former Board Member, and a long-time member of the EAC community.
